Object 490B Belka is an alternative design for the Object 490 main battle tank after deciding to use a 152 mm grooved weapons instead of a 125 mm -free ball in the future Soviet MBTs in 1984. Object 490B was largely different from the original Object 490A design; Instead of composite armor, it had highly sloping steel anterior armor and four palette sets. In the design, the back of the vehicle was in front of the main weapons and ammunition in a separate compartment, including a two -person crew, and two engine and fuel tanks on the front. The placement of the crew at the back of the vehicle increased the survival ability of the crew to a great extent, and considering that the other components of the tank would be sufficient to prevent piercing bullets from entering the crew compartment, the use of composite armor was unnecessary. The tank's four pallet sets were designed to allow the vehicle to remain in motion, even if the front pallets were damaged by mines or enemy fever. Due to the introduction of Object 299's universal war platform vehicle concept in the late 1980s, the design never overcome the model model stage.
