AN/TPY-2 radars are high-resolution, gradual arranged, X-dimensional radars specially designed and manufactured for the missile defense task. Radar can be deployed in one of the two modes: terminal or forward -based. In terminal mode, the TPY-2 radar is integrated with a Thaad system and serves as its primary sensor. In this mode, the sensor is directed up to follow the final stages of the missile road and allows Thaad's ability to intervene both outside the atmosphere and when a re -entrying vehicle enters the atmosphere. This mode carries a shorter range due to the orientation of the radar.

In the future -based mode, the radar provides significant sensor marks of missiles in the mid -route stage of the GMD system. TPY-2 can identify and monitor missiles from these advanced locations in support and early mid-phase stages and determine information such as speed and orbit.
