Faun SLT-56 is a German, heavy, wheeled attractive unit from the post-war and modern period. The first copies of this vehicle appeared in the second half of the 1980s, and in 1989 Bundeswehr decided to buy such 49 tractors. The vehicle gets power from a single KHD-12 engine with a capacity of 19.1 liter and 525 HP power.

Faun SLT-56 was developed in line with the needs of Bundeswehr's Leopard 2 MBTs. The new tractor is also the continuation of the previously used SLT-50 vehicle and despite its external similarity, it varies in many respects. First of all, it has a different engine and a transfer body. It also has a higher load capacity and its reliability has been strictly improved. However, SLT-56 often uses older type semi-trailers (everyday name: Elephant). In 1993, a few of these heavy truck tractors were put into service at the United Nations Mission in 1993 in Somalia.
