The first BMW M3 was based on the E30 3 series, and the deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and Group A Touring, which required a total of 5,000 cars, was intended to be a special homology. It was introduced to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985 and started production from March 1986 to June 1991. The E30 M3 was mainly produced in Coupé body style, but a limited number of cabrio was produced. In addition to the front separator, rear apron, threshold panels, the changes in the body in the back glass (C column) and the trunk area improved aerodynamics. For aerodynamic reasons, the rear window was straightened and the tailgate was made of light, glass reinforced plastic and increased by about 40 mm for better air flow. Changes behind the car resulted in lower lifting forces and better flat line stability. In addition, the window was glued - as in other E30 models, the window tire and pipes were not frame. As a result, M3 reached C D = 0.33, a relatively low friction coefficient. As in the Standart 3 series, C D = 0.38. The normal 3 series and the only outer body panels shared by the M3 were hood, ceiling panel and opened ceiling.
