İzel Locomotive is a railway locomotive running with a diesel engine. Basically, several types of diesel locomotives have been developed in terms of the way mechanical power is transmitted to the wheels.

Early internal combustion locomotives used kerosene and gasoline as fuel. In 1898, Rudolf Diesel received the patent of the first diesel engine. With the continuous improvements in the role, his dimensions shrunk and increased the power-extension rates to a locomotive. The internal combustion engines only operate efficiently in a limited torque range and low-power gasoline engines could be connected to a mechanical transmission, while the more powerful diesel engines required the development of new transmission forms. The first successful diesel engines used diesel-electric transmissions and in 1925, a small amount of 600 BG (450 KW) in the United States. In 1930, Armstrong Whitworth delivered two 1,200 hp (890 kW) locomotives using Sulzer design engines in the Buenos Aires in Argentina. In 1933, the diesel-electric technology developed by Maybach was used to push the DRG CLASS SVT 877, a high-speed intercity-two-vehicle set, starting from 1935 and entered mass production with other flattened vehicle sets in Germany. In late 1934, General Motors' research and development studies in 1930–34 and advances in the light body design of Budd Company were brought to high -speed outlining passenger service. As a result of the economic recovery obtained after World War II, diesel locomotives were widely adopted in many countries. Diesel locomotives have provided more flexibility and performance than steam locomotives, while at the same time reduced operating and maintenance costs. Diesel-hydraulic transmissions developed in the 1950s, but since the 1970s, diesel-electric transmissions became dominant.
