Hobbytime Model Information

The Santa María ship left the port of Palos de la Frontera, Spain on August 3, 1492 under the command of Columbus. This journey pointed to the beginning of Europe's discovery of the American continent.

Santa María was a Nao with a solid type of ship, suitable for long sea journeys. During the journey, Columbus and crew met with many difficulties, including storms and the uncertainty of traveling towards unknown lands. Finally, on October 12, 1492, they reached the land and reached an island we know as Bahamas. This event is considered one of the most important moments of history because it opens the door to the discovery and colonization of the New World.

Unfortunately, Santa Maria could not complete her return journey to Spain. On December 25, 1492, he was ashore on a sand set off the coast of the shore. The crew built a castle called La Navidad using the remains of the ship, and some sailors stayed here on the way back to Spain with the news of Columbus reconnaissance.

Despite the tragic end, Santa Maria continues to be a symbol of the age of discovery and the adventurous spirit that characterizes the Renaissance.

How big was the Santa Maria ship?
Santa María was about 70 fit (21 meters) long and 25 fit (7.6 meters) wide. It had a tonnage of approximately 6 fit (1.8 meters) and a tonnage of approximately 100 tons. It was the largest of the three ships of Columbus and carried a crew for about 40 people.
