The Lancer Turbo is Mitsubishi's rally car that debuted in the 1981 World Rally Championship. It was based on the European-specification Lancer EX2000 Turbo introduced in 1979. It was a front-engine, rear-wheel drive (FR, 2WD) car developed in accordance with Group 4 regulations. The front-mounted engine was a 1997 cc inline four-cylinder SOHC engine. Equipped with a single Mitsubishi Heavy Industries intercooler turbocharger, the engine produced 280 horsepower. Development continued and the car made its WRC debut in 1981. The following year, in August 1982, on the ninth stage of the 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland, P. Ailikkala and J. Piironen achieved an impressive third place. This car demonstrated the high performance of traditional FR2WD mechanics and balanced chassis configuration.
