The exterior, including air vents and other fine details, has been meticulously recreated, faithfully capturing the intense expression of the rally car. Competing in the WRC's first 4WD car in 1981, quattro was developed to comply with the Group B regulations that came into force in 1984. Notable features included a wheelbase shortened by more than 300 mm and a shorter overall body length. The engine was a front-turbocharged 2133 cc inline five-cylinder engine. Further evolution, including improved weight distribution and larger aerodynamic parts, led to the S1 [E2] in 1985. Walter Röhrl competed in his first WRC round, the Monte Carlo Rally, in 1986 and finished second behind a Lancia Delta S4.
