Hobbytime Review
Lockheed/Boeing/General Dynamics YF-22 is a single, double-engine hunter aircraft and technology demonstrator designed for the United States Air Force. The design was produced for the screening/verification phase of the advanced tactical hunter competition organized by the Air Force and became the finalist in the competition. YF-22 won the competition against Northrop YF-23 and entered into production under the name of Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. Although YF-22 has a similar aerodynamic design and order with the production model F-22; The cockpit had a number of differences in the inner structure of the body with its vertical stabilization, position and design of the wings. In the 1980s, the United States Air Force began to search for a new model that will replace hunter aircraft, especially to resist the SU-27 and MİG-29 models of the Soviet Union. In the advanced tactical hunter project initiated for this purpose, offers were offered by Lockheed, Boeing, General Dynamics, McDonnell Douglas, Northrop, Grumman and Rockwell. The finals came from Lockheed and Northop. While Northrop continued to work with McDonnell Douglas on the YF-23 model, Lockheed developed his YF-22 offer jointly with Boeing and General Dynamics. The YF-22 prototype built by Lockheed was more agile, although it had a slower and larger radar section than the YF-23. For this reason, the United States was elected by the Air Force in April 1991 as the winner of the competition. After the election, the first YF-22 was retired and given to a museum; The second prototype continued flight tests. After a accident, the antenna was transferred to the role of trial intermediary.
In 1981, the United States Air Force, F-15 EAGLE and F-16 Fighting Falcon instead of a new air superior hunter aircraft needed tactical hunter (ATF) aircraft. This requirement became important due to worldwide threats, including the development and spread of the Soviet MİG-29 and SU-27. The design of the hunter aircraft to be developed would benefit from new technologies, including composite materials, light alloys, advanced flight control systems, stronger engines and ghost technology. [1] In September 1985, the Air Force sent a request for technical bids to defense industry companies. In July 1985, seven offers were presented for the project, while Lockheed and Northrop designs were selected on 31 October 1986. The collaborations established by the two companies, Lockheed/Boeing/General Dynamics and Northrop/McDonnell Douglas produced YF-22 and YF-23 prototypes during the program's 50-month screening stage and performed flight tests.
YF-22 was designed to meet the requirements of survival, supersyir, radar, not being caught and ease of care, published by the United States Air Force. [5] Since the design of Lockheed was selected as one of the finalists, the company took the leadership of the program partners through the Skunk Works section. Lockheed would be responsible for the latest assembly in Palmdale, California, as well as the front cockpit and body. Wings and back body boeing; Middle body, weapon compartments, tail and landing sets would be built by General Dynamics. [6] The design of the YF-22 was more traditional compared to the Northrop/McDonnell Douglas counterpart. The wings of the aircraft had larger, all wing -length escaping edge control surfaces. [7] While YF-23 V had two tail surfaces with tail design, YF-22 had two horizontal and two vertical stabilizations, which gave him the ability to maneuver than his opponent. [8] For the demonstration-in-proof stage, two prototypes of each model equipped with General Electric YF120 engines and the other with Pratt & Whitney YF119 engines were produced.
YF-22 first Lockheed's II. The P-38 Lightning model produced during World War II was dedicated to the unofficial "Lightning II". This name was used in the mid -1990s until the US Air Force plane was officially called "raptor". [10] In 2006, the F-35, another hunter aircraft produced by Lockheed, officially called "Lightning II".
The first YF-22 prototype (PAV-1, serial number 87-0700, n22yf) equipped with GE YF120 engines, [12] [13] He left the factory on 29 August 1990 [6] [14] [14] and for the first time on 29 September 1990, he got up from Palmdale under the command of David L. Ferguson. [15] During the PAV-1 18-minute flight, it reached a maximum of 250 knots (460 km/h; 290 mph) and 12,500 fit (3,800 m) altitude before landing at Edwards Airbase. Following the flight, Ferguson said the rest of the YF-22 test program will concentrate on "both sound and six maneuvering ability". Equipped with P&W YF119 engines, the second YF-22 prototype (PAV-2, S/N 87-0701, N22yx) was first on October 30th under Tom Morgenfeld pilot.
