Hobbytime Review

Curtiss P -40 Warhawk - an American fighter plane from the Second World War.
This kind of design dates back to the previous P-36 Hawk design (1934) running with air-cooled radial motor. A new project has been developed due to the lack of more likely development of this machine, which forces the pilot cabin to move to the cabinet and undertakes a turbocharged liquid-cooled V-Motor type Allison V-1710. back. Thirteen copies of this reconstructed machine called XP-37 were produced. Due to the problems in the turbocharger, it was decided to simplify the design. In July 1937, one of the P-36A units (no. 38-10) was equipped with 1,150 horsepower Allison V-1710-19 engine. This project was named in the factory 75p (Military XP-40) in the factory.

The installation of a V motor required additional changes in the structure, especially in the front of the body. Since two 12.7 mm m2 machine guns were attached to the sides of the engine, an air entrance was placed under the nose for the carburetor. Further below, there was an air intake for oil cooler under the nose. Unlike the XP-37, the cabin was not moved backwards. Six 9 kilograms of bomb holders were placed under the wings. The prototype first flew on October 14, 1938. The performance was insufficient, the aircraft reached a speed of 482 km/h, so the prototype was rebuilt and the air intake was replaced to buy a radiator for both oil and engine cooling fluid. The exhaust pipe system was replaced as six pieces on both sides and the under -body protection was redesigned. The reconstructed XP-40 reached a speed of 550 km/h at a height of 3.718 m.
