Hobbytime Review
McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) AV-8B Harrier II is a single-motor land attack aircraft that can make vertical or short take-off and landing (V/Stol), forming the second generation of the Harrier Jump Jet family. The aircraft is primarily used in many role tasks, ranging from close air support of the land troops to armed discoveries. AV-8B is used by the United States Marine Corps (USMC), the Spanish navy and the Italian navy. The British Aerospace Harrier II, a variety of AV-8B, was developed for the British army, and the other is TAV-8B, a special training plane for two.
Finally, the project, which led to the creation of AV-8B, began in the early 1970s as a joint effort between the United States and the United Kingdom, which aims to address the first generation Hawker Siddeley Harrier's operational inadequacies. The first efforts focused on a larger, stronger Pegasus engine to significantly improve Harrier's capabilities. Due to budget restrictions, the UK left the project in 1975. Following the withdrawal of the United Kingdom, McDonnell Douglas redesigned the previous Av-8a Harrier extensively to create AV-8B. While maintaining the overall order of the predecessor, it contains a new, larger composite wing with an additional hard point. On both sides, an upgraded cockpit, a redesigned body and other structural and aerodynamic improvements. The aircraft is supported by a raised version of Pegasus. AV-8B made its first flight in November 1981 and was put into service in January 1985 with USMC. Subsequent updates added night attack capability and radar, AV-8B (NA) and AV-8B Harrier II Plus versions appeared, respectively. A expanded version called Harrier III was also examined, but not followed. In 1981, the United Kingdom re -participated in the developed Harrier project in 1981 through British Aerospace and provided an important business share in the project. Following the 1990s, the Boeing Vebae Systems program jointly supported the program. Approximately 340 aircraft were produced in the 22 -year production program, which ended in 2003.
Typically, AV-8Bs, operated from small aircraft carriers, large amphibious attack ships and simple advanced operation bases, have participated in numerous military and human operations by proving their versatile assets. The US Army General Norman Schwarzkopf called the USMC Harrier II one of a few important weapons in the Gulf War. He has also served in a permanent freedom operation in Afghanistan since 2001, in the Iraq War since 2003 and has been used in Odyssey Dawn operation. Italian and Spanish Harrier IIs took part in overseas conflicts with NATO coalitions. During the service history, AV-8B had a high rate of accidents in relation to the percentage of time spent during the critical departure and landing stages. The USMC and the Italian navy AV-8Bs are replaced by Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II and the first is expected to use Harriers until 2025.
