The origins of Belgium's "Societé anonyme document d'Exploitation de la Navigation aérienne" (French: "Belgian Air Navigation Operating Company"), or SABENA for short, date back to 1923. In addition to operating flights to neighboring countries in Europe, the company also played a pioneering role in long-haul flights, especially to its then colony, the Belgian Congo. Sabena, II. Shortly before it ceased all European operations due to the outbreak of World War II, it received the first two Douglas DC-3 passenger aircraft, which were revolutionary at the time. II. After World War II ended, Sabena resumed operations with a fleet of C-47 transport aircraft, thousands of which are now redundant. One of these first demilitarized C-47s converted to DC-3s was OO-AWN. Built for the US Army Air Forces in 1943 and briefly used by the Dutch Air Force in the East Indies (now Indonesia), the aircraft was delivered to Sabena in 1950 and remained part of the fleet until its retirement in 1969.
