The political and revolutionary upheavals that engulfed Nicaragua during the Cold War also greatly affected the country's commercial aviation. The Somoza Family, which ruled the Central American country for decades, was overthrown by the revolutionary Sandinistas in 1979. This also led to the closure of the country's national airline, LANICA, in which the ruling Somoza family has a majority stake. The junta in power at the time established Aerolíneas Nicaragüenses SA (also known as Aeronica) as its successor in 1981. As it became increasingly impossible to keep LANICA's fleet of Boeing aircraft airworthy due to a lack of spare parts due to the international embargo, the airline turned to Soviet-made aircraft to strengthen its international routes. Named after one of the country's largest volcanoes, Momotombo, a factory-fresh TU-154M aircraft arrived in Managua on 20 December 1989. For just over two years, he made frequent trips to Mexico City as well as other cities in Latin America. Following the end of the civil war and the re-elections in 1992, along with the political and economic changes it brought, the airline was closed. "Momotombo", with its unusual and colorful appearance, was grounded and parked at Managua International Airport. It was finally acquired by Russia's Omskavia in 1997 and was later sold to Iran's Mahan Air, where it remained in service until at least 2005.
