On March 1, 2024, the first two of 29 Airbus A220 jet aircraft made their first commercial flights. They are significantly more fuel efficient than the Boeing 717s they will replace. The state-of-the-art A220 is not only almost 50% quieter than its predecessor, but also produces up to 25% less carbon emissions. With almost twice the range of 717s, the A220 can fly between any two points in Australia and to a variety of offshore destinations. Qantas has sought Australian help in naming its new A220 fleet, asking the public to vote on names around the theme of "native wildlife". A clear favorite among those voting, this cute animal's name was placed on the nose of the VH-X4B.
