The first of these small and agile Yakovlev-designed tri-engine aircraft arrived in Poland in 1972, and many of them joined the LOT fleet from 1981 onwards. With a capacity of 24 passengers, LOT's Yak-40 fleet operated flights to almost all European ports, including longer-haul flights from Poland to Morocco or Gibraltar. SP-GEA was removed from service in 1994 and continued to be used by other operators until it was disassembled for spare parts in 2008.
