Herpa 538367 1/500 Scale, US Air Force McDonnell Douglas KC-10 Extender, 60th AMW, 86-0031, Metal, Ready for Display
On September 26, 2024, the last two KC-10 Extenders, including the three-engine aircraft with serial number 86-0031, departed Travis Air Force Base for their final flights to the 309th Aviation Maintenance and Renewal Group in neighboring Arizona, where retired aircraft are stored, recycled, and/or destroyed. Since 1980, the KC-10 has been a vital asset for U.S. and allied forces, performing air transport and aerial refueling missions around the world. Often referred to as the "Gucci-10" due to its comfortable and spacious interior compared to other military aircraft, the KC-10 could carry twice as much fuel as the older KC-135, as well as as much cargo as the C-17 Globemaster. To celebrate his retirement, Herpa will produce a limited edition series of three models in spring and summer 2025. The first model bears the insignia of the 60th Air Mobility Wing, the last U.S. Air Force unit to use the Extender.
