The 36th Air Command and Control Wing operates four E-3 Sentry Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft serving the French Aerospace Forces. Each of these aircraft bears the traditional insignia of former French Air Force squadrons on its tail. The aircraft with serial number 36-CB is named in honor of one of the oldest French squadrons, BR 43 “Charognard” (“vulture”), established in 1918. The same aircraft commemorates two anniversaries at once: In 2022, the French Air Force not only celebrates the 90th anniversary of the 36th Wing, which was upgraded from air observation group to wing status in 1932, but also the 30th anniversary of the entry into French service of the E-3 Sentry.
