The TK.23-14 aircraft was welcomed with a special ceremony by senior air force and Airbus officials upon its arrival following a short domestic flight from Airbus facilities in Seville to the headquarters of the 31st Air Wing in Zaragoza. Not only was this aircraft the 14th A400M Atlas to enter service with the Spanish Air Force, it also arrived in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 31st Wing; On this occasion, it was decorated with a special tail design around the elephant figure used in the emblems of the union's two squadrons. Founded in 1973 as the 301st Squadron, the unit began transport operations with C-130 Hercules aircraft in the same year. Five years later, the squadron was restructured as an Air Transport Wing consisting of two squadrons. The A400M, designated T.23 in Spanish service or TK.23 for versions with (modular) aerial refueling, began replacing the C-130 Hercules in 2016. This new, state-of-the-art transport aircraft can transport more cargo at higher speeds and longer distances, further supporting the unit's motto of "Lo que sea, donde sea y cuando sea" – "No matter what, wherever and whenever".
