The F/A-18 has its origins in the F-17 prototype, which attracted the attention of the US Navy command in 1974. The contract for serial production of the aircraft was signed in 1976. To speed up the work, Northrop company entered into cooperation with McDonnell-Douglas company. As a result, a test flight of the prototype took place on November 18, 1978, and a year later successful landings were made on the aircraft carrier. Since 1982, the aircraft has been put into mass production, equipped with General Electric F404-GE-402 engines. The aircraft was produced in several versions. The first versions were the F-18A (fighter aircraft) and F-18B (training aircraft). Foreign orders from Spain, Canada and Australia quickly appeared. In 1987, an F-18C version adapted for the use of AMRAAM missiles was produced. A year later, the F/A-18D, a two-seat version of the F-18, entered all-weather service and could be used as an attack aircraft. On its basis, the reconnaissance version R/F-18D was created. The newest versions (the so-called Super Hornet) - F/A-18E and F/A-18F - are highly modified versions of the F/A-18D. They are characterized by increased body length, wingspan and surface area. They also feature new General Electric F414 engines and significantly expanded and modernized avionics. They were first introduced in 1995. The EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft was also created on the basis of the F-18. All versions of the F/A-18 were appreciated by pilots; They are characterized by a low failure rate, ease of use and very good flight parameters. Hornets took part in operations against Libya in 1986 and Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Technical data (F/A-18 C version): Maximum speed: 1915 km/h, rate of climb: 254 m/s, practical ceiling height: 15240 m, maximum range: 3340 km, operational radius: 280-740 km, armament: fixed - single 20 mm M61A-1 six-barreled gun, underslung - up to 7700 kg cargo.
