IJN July 1942 (after increased anti-aircraft guns)IJN December 1941 (beginning of war) Tenryu was a Japanese light cruiser whose keel was laid in 1917, launched in March 1918, and entered service with the Imperial Japanese Navy in November 1919. The ship was 142.6 m long, 12.3 m wide and had a full displacement of 4,600 tons. The maximum speed of the cruiser Tenryu was 33 knots. At the time of its launch, its main armament consisted of 4 140 mm guns in single positions and its additional armament consisted of, among others, 2 triple 533 mm torpedo tubes. Tenryu was the first cruiser of the same name. Ships of this type were built as light and very fast cruisers designed to serve as "Leaders", that is, guides of a destroyer fleet. Particular emphasis was placed on speed in their designs, at the expense of armor or larger onboard guns of larger caliber. In the 1930s, the cruiser Tenryu primarily carried out patrol missions off the coast of China, and in 1938 she actively supported the Japanese landing in the Canton area. II. The cruiser's combat course during World War II began with fighting in the Wake Island area in December 1941 and supported further landing operations in New Ireland and New Britain in early 1942. Tenryu took a very active part in the battles for Guadalcanal; He took part in the Battle of Savo Island on the night of 8-9 August 1942. Tenryu was sunk by the submarine USS Albacore on 18 December 1942.
