Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey (Osprey) is a multi-purpose vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. The prototype flight took place in February 1988, but the aircraft was not approved for mass production until September 2005. Mass production, which started a short time later, continues. The propulsion system is provided by two Rolls-Royce AE 1107C-Liberty engines, each with 6150 horsepower. The V-22 was the first mass-produced aircraft with a rotary propulsion system. This unusual system provides not only vertical takeoff and landing, but also a very high cruise speed, combining the advantages of a helicopter and turboprop transport aircraft. The main and so far only user of the V-22 is the US Marine Corps.
