Kaga (DDH-184) is a modern Japanese helicopter carrier (another classification term: helicopter destroyer). The keel of this ship was laid in 2013 and was launched in August 2015. The ship was put into service with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in March 2017. The total length of the ship when launched was 248 meters and its width was 38 meters. Its full displacement is approximately 27,000 tonnes and its maximum speed is probably just over 30 knots. Deck armament consists of two SeaRAM kits and two 20 mm Vulcan Phalanx kits. The ship can carry a maximum of 28-30 aircraft. Although Kaga (DDH-184) was officially designed and launched to replace the Shirane-class Kurama (DDH-144) helicopter destroyer, it is essentially a completely different type of ship. Kaga (DDH-184) is definitely larger than its predecessor, has much greater combat capabilities and, above all, has a continuous flight deck, making it essentially a light aircraft carrier. Moreover, the ship will be able to operate STOVL F-35 B aircraft without major problems. Kaga (DDH-184) is also larger than the Hyuga class ships. It is worth adding that the name of the ship refers not only to a province of Japan, but also to the name of an aircraft carrier in World War II. In 2018, Kaga (DDH-184) made voyages in the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean.
