About

Until 1943, the infantry tank units in front of it were almost impossible to move their weapons using a truck under enemy fire, causing loss of tremendous equipment during emergency displacement (when a veil for withdrawal) and their views reached the top. OKW has explored a previously thought outline on a 7.5 cm PAK 40/1 tank weapon (according to the standard PAK used by Wehrmacht) on a RSO chassis. After seeing the plans, Hitler ordered a limited production run for the war test before the prototypes were completed.

The project was carried out by Steyr. RSO's suspension remained unchanged, but a low, light armored superstructure was replaced by the front driver compartment. The result was a light, cheap production and highly active infantry tank weapon. The RSO / PAK 40 has been exposed to more than a traditional, open -crested panzergäger -style tank hunter, which is much higher than the construction cost.

Deutsches Panzermuseum Munster, RSO / PAK40 in Germany.

Although the vehicle was designed to be used by infantry tank units, all pre -production vehicles were given to armored units (Panzer Jager Abteilungen 743 and 744 and 18th Panzergrenadier section) due to urgent production needs. Low speeds and light armor inevitably caused problems that are trying to cooperate in other war vehicles for these units. The German Army group in the south of the units organized for the battle test declared the vehicle useful and large -scale production was rapidly allowed.

Despite Steyr's decision to pass the entire production line to RSO / PAK 40, a certain order did not reach the industry and so far only about 60 production vehicles have been produced. While the first vehicles were removed from the production line, Steyr began to test an advanced version with a wider chassis and pallet; These changes improved cross -country performance and reduced the center of gravity, a problem in a height of such a high place.

None of the improved version came to the fore. In October 1943, Steyr ordered the Ministry of ammunition to stop the production of all kinds of crawler vehicles. Until then, a new armed version of the expanded chassis was designed and planned to enter production in 1944; The 88 mm PAK 43 L71 had a stronger and less noisy V8 gasoline engine to carry its weapon, the most powerful tank weapon of the time called Pz.Jäg. K43. It is doubtful whether the war was built at the end of the war.
