About
Hummel was designed in 1942 to provide moving artillery support to tank troops. It was first used during the Barbarossa operation against Soviet Russia. Wehrmacht had other flasks in his hand, but they were all in use. Therefore, work started before this operation.
The first prototype was consisted of 105 mm Lefh 17 obüsen placed on the Panzer III tank chassis. However, the Panzer IV chassis was more useful for this ball.
However, Panzer IV chassis was not liked in the prototype. The reason for this was that the ball used to be stronger. As a result, the escalating component and steering system of Panzer III was decided in a infrastructure using suspension and engine of the Panzer IV tank. This infrastructure was called Geschützwagen III/IV. On top of this structure, much stronger 150 mm SFH 18 l/30 howitzers were placed. The same chassis was later used in the tank destructor named Nashorn.
Hummel had a light armored superstructure with the crew and the ball. The vehicle was in the middle of the engine.
The latest model Hummel vehicles were built for the driver and radio operator.
Although more serial manufacturing was asked to be further manufactured upon the appreciation of Hummel in the future, they were equipped with 10.5cm Lefh 18m balls used in Wespe because of the allied bombings and resources shifted to other parts.
Even if the production intensity of these models was not much, they were used during the war.
