M4 Sherman, USA production II. It was the middle class tank, the main tank class of the US Army and Marine Infantry Corps in World War II. It is named after General William Tecumseh Sherman (Read: Şörmın). The real name of the tank is M4 General Sherman, but it is famous for M4 Sherman. The variations of the M4s in Canada until 1943 were called Grizzly. The nickname in the USSR is Emca. Nearly 50,000 M4 has been produced.
M4s are fast, high mobility, thin armored, light, reliable, easy to produce and cheap tanks. The design is very simple and can be produced quickly. 75 mm balls are weak compared to other tanks in the time. It was used by the US, British, Soviet and French forces. M4s have many derivatives. The Jumbo model has heavy armor and a high -diameter ball, DD (Duplex Drive) (double driving) derivative is used for removal tasks. Different derivatives of M4s have not been produced.
They collided with Panzer IV tanks. Although they remain ineffective against Tiger I and Panther 5 tanks, the tanks that were neutralized due to their ease and cheapness have been renewed in a short time. They show similar properties with the T-34 tank, but T-34 is a better tank than M4 thanks to its wide palettes and more inclined armor. The 75 mm ball of standard M4 Sherman tanks is quite ineffective against most tanks.
M4s were used by many countries for a long time after World War II. Israel uses some tools based on these tanks today.
The M4 tank is one of the most produced tanks of World War II, but its success is very low compared to its number. Although it is shown as a successful tank, the M4s are not the tanks, but the armored vehicle, and the purpose of its design is not to fight tanks, but to help the infantry progress, to destroy shelters and to clean ways.
M4s are designed based on M3 Lee (Li) tanks. It has one 75 mm ball on the upper side instead of two balls like M3 Lee. Many special derivatives of M4s have been produced, especially by General Percy Hobart (Persian Hobbiz), one of the most interesting tank derivatives.

The British put 17 pounder (76.2 mm) anti-tank ball in the M4s. Later, M4A1, M4A2, M4A3 species were equipped with a 76 mm ball and their anti-tank capacity was increased. The M4A4s were equal to T-34/85 as anti-tank capacity.
M4s are designed to support infantry. The American General Staff left the task of destroying tanks to artillery, tank hunters, anti-tank weapons and planes. Tanks should only be used for infantry support. In fact, this was a imitation of the German Blitzkrieg (Lightning War) doctrine. When the German Tiger and Panther tanks entered the war, the belief in this doctrine weakened and the M4s were made in accordance with anti-tank tasks.
Since the Pacific wars are usually passed at sea, there are not much tank wars. Although there were several conflicts, the M4s have easily defeated Japanese tanks from the 1930s. They did not even need to wear anti-tank ball to the M4s.
