The space shuttle was a partially reusable world orbit system that was partially reusable by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as part of the space shuttle program. The official program name was the space transport system (STS) from the 1969 plan for the reusable spacecraft system, the only product financed for development. The first of the four orbit test flights took place in 1981 and led to operational flights that started in 1982.
