In 1970, the International Fighter Aircraft (IFA) tender was opened against the F-5A aircraft against airplanes such as Soviet-produced MİG-21. Northrop company won the tender. The aircraft initially known as F-5A-21, then became the F-5E. The F-5E F-5A (more than 5,000 lbf) General Electric J85-21 engines, and more fuel-receiving fuel had a prolonged and enlarged body. F-5E's wings were installed with expanded front edge extensions, the wing area was increased. The maneuverability of the aircraft was increased with the changes made in the wings. Türkiye decided to purchase F-5 fighter aircraft within the scope of military aids from the USA to replace F-84 and F-86 fighter planes.
The first aircraft began to come to Turkey on December 25, 1965. Until mid-January 1966, nine F-5A and two F-5B were delivered to one fleet (142 fleet) training.
Deliveries of the aircraft were generally carried out by sea, but some were delivered by air. Four Northrop F-5A, which was piloted by two Turks and two American pilots, started from the McClellan Air Base on 23 November 1966 and reached the Kaz Gulf (Canada), Sondestorm (Greenland), Reykjavik (Iceland), Alconbury (England), Ramstein (Germany), Napoli (Italy) and Çiğli (Italy).

In 1969 and 1970, 20 of the RF-5As, the discovery version of the F-5, came to Turkey. In addition, 13 F-5A aircraft were converted to RF-5A. These planes worked in the 192 and 162 fleets.
Following the Cyprus Peace Operation, the Air Force Command, which faced the American embargo, used some aircraft as spare parts to keep the F-5s active. During this period, Libya sent 6 F-5A and 2 F-5B to Turkey.
In the mid-70s, Türkiye plans to produce Northrop F-5E under a undergraduate at TUSAŞ facilities, but the plan was canceled.
After the removal of the embargo, many non-duty F-5 were transferred to Turkey. Between 1983-1987, Norway sent 26 F-5A and 6 F-5B to Turkey. These aircraft were deployed in 162. Filo.
