USS LST-491, II. During World War II, it was the pioneering ship of its own class extraction ships built for the United States Navy. Like most of the class, it was not named and it was properly referred to as a body definition. LST-491 was laid on 29 July 1943 by Evansville, Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Company in Indiana; It was launched on 23 September 1943; Miss Barton Cook sponsored; and on December 3, 1943. LST-491, who was appointed to the European Theater during the Second World War, joined the occupation of Normandy in June 1944 and the occupation of Southern France in August 1944 and September.
