Hobbytime Model Information

The M4 Sherman was an American medium tank used in World War II. The first prototypes were produced in 1941, and mass production took place between 1942 and 1945. In total, approximately 49,000 units were produced with all versions; making it one of the most produced tanks of the Second World War and the most important tank in the equipment of the Allied armies during that conflict. The M4 Sherman was powered by the 400 horsepower single-engine M4A1 Continental R 975 C4. The vehicle was armed with a single 75 mm M3 gun or a 76 mm M1 gun or a 105 mm M4 howitzer and two 7.62 mm Browning 1919A machine guns, depending on the version.

The M4 Sherman was developed as the successor to the M2 and M3 tanks, but used many components of the latter. First of all, it used an only slightly modified chassis of the M3 Lee vehicle. In the design of the M4 Sherman, the focus was primarily on the role of an infantry support vehicle, not on fighting enemy tanks - this was the role of American tank destroyers. Only possible clashes with Pz.Kpfw III and Pz.Kpfw IV vehicles were assumed. Mass production of the new tank and the lowest possible production cost also played an important role. The result was a tank for 1942 and early 1943 with good armament, average armor, but a sloped frontal plate, but also poor maneuverability and - especially in the early versions - very susceptible to fire as a result of hits in the engine compartment. However, at the same time, a tank was created that is truly suitable for mass production and has significant modernization potential. During mass production of the M4 Sherman, many development versions were created. Chronologically the first was the M4A1 version with cast armor. Another, the M4A2, had welded armor and a new General Motors 6460 engine rated at 375-410 horsepower, but was much less susceptible to fire. An M4A3 version also appeared, equipped with a 105 mm howitzer and powered by a 450 horsepower Ford GAA engine. Based on the M4A3 version, two sub-versions were created: M4A3E2 Jumbo and HVSS with reinforced armor and M4A3E8 with a 76 mm gun. An interesting development version was the T34 Calliope, with unguided missiles mounted in its turret. The M4 Sherman was also supplied to the British and Red Armies in large numbers. Based on this tank, the British developed the Firefly version with a large 17-pounder anti-tank gun. II. During World War II, M4 Sherman tanks fought in the ranks of the Red Army in North Africa (1942-1943), Italy (1943-1945), battles in Normandy, France and West Germany (1944-1945), as well as in the Pacific and on the Eastern Front. II. After World War II, the M4 Sherman was used in many countries, including Argentina, Belgium, India, Israel, Japan, Pakistan and Turkey. He also took part in many post-1945 conflicts; these include the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 and the Six-Day War of 1967.
