The K2 Black Panther is a modern, 3rd generation South Korean main battle tank produced by Hyundai Rotem. The first prototypes of the vehicle were made in 2004, and mass production started in 2013 and continues until today. The exact number of tanks produced is not known. According to estimates, there are approximately 100 tanks of this type in the production line. K2 is powered by the 1500 horsepower MTU MT 883 engine. The vehicle is armed with a single 120 mm tank gun, 1 7.62 mm machine gun and 1 12.7 mm machine gun.Although the modern K1 tank entered service in the early 1990s, the South Korean army command decided to develop a new tank that would complement the K1 vehicle and possibly become its successor. It was also decided to rely as much as possible on the domestic arms industry and to use the assistance of foreign companies only as a last resort. Moreover, the most advanced technology was chosen. As a result, the K2 tank has a very modern SKO (fire control system), an effective 120 mm gun, very high mobility and maneuverability and powerful armor consisting of a rare combination of ERA and NERA type composite and reactive armor. Without a doubt, the K2 is a machine at least comparable to western 3rd generation frontline tanks such as the Leopard 2 or the M1 Abrams. However, like the French Leclerc, unlike them, it uses an automatic loader, which significantly increases the rate of fire and allows reducing the number of crew to 3 people. Thanks to technological advances, the unit cost of the K2 tank is estimated to be approximately 8.5 million dollars in 2014 prices. Currently K2 is not exported.
