The PzKpfw IV (Panzerkampfwagen IV) was a German medium tank used in World War II. The first prototypes of the vehicle were produced in 1936, and mass production continued between 1938 and 1945, resulting in the production of approximately 8,600 vehicles. The D version of the tank was powered by a single Maybach HL 120 TRM engine with 300 HP power. It was equipped with 1 75 mm KwK 37 L/24 gun and 2 7.92 mm MG 34 machine guns. The PzKpfw IV was the result of a competition opened by the German Armament Office in late 1934 for a medium-class tank weighing up to 18 tons and armed with a 75 mm gun. The Krupp company won the competition and the vehicle they produced was put into mass production. This vehicle, II. It can be called the "workhorse" of the German armored forces during World War II and one of the most intensively developed and modernized tanks of the Wehrmacht. Many variants of the PzKpfw IV were produced during the production process. Chronologically the first was version A, equipped with a 75 mm short-barreled gun and a 230 horsepower engine. However, versions B and C quickly appeared, and several important changes were made to these versions: First of all, more powerful engines (Maybach HL 120 TRM with 265 HP in version B and 300 HP in version C - these engines were installed on the PzKpfw IV until 1945) and the entire armor of the vehicle was improved. The F1 and F2 versions were a real revolution; Frontal armor was increased to 60 mm and the main armament was replaced by the large, long-barreled 75 mm KwK 40 L/43 gun, allowing them to engage any Allied or Soviet force in 1942 and 1943. The most frequently produced versions of the PzKpfw IV were the G, H and J versions, which were very similar to the F1 and F2 versions. The main armament (still the KwK 40 gun) and the engine and chassis have not changed significantly. On the other hand, the armor was slightly strengthened and from the beginning of 1943 armored visors (Schurzen) were installed. Numerous other vehicles were also produced on the PzKpfw IV chassis, such as the StuG IV assault gun, the Nashorn tank destroyer or the Wirbelwind self-propelled anti-aircraft gun. PzKpfw IV tanks, World War II It was used on almost all fronts of World War II - from the September campaign in 1939, through the French campaign in 1940, operations Barbarossa and Typhoon in 1941, the Battle of Kursk in 1943 and the final operations of the German army against the USSR and the Western Allies in 1944-1945.
