The M3 semi -palette was an American armored personnel carrier semi -palette used by the Allies during World War II and the Cold War. The M3, which is derived from the M2 semi -crawled car, was produced extensively with approximately 15,000 standard M3 and more than 38,000 variants produced. The M3 was extensively modified with several dozen variant designs produced for different purposes. During the Second World War, M3 and its varieties served in the British army and marine, as well as the British Society of Nations and the Soviet Red Army forces on all major fronts during the war. M3 and varieties were produced by many manufacturers such as Diamond T, White Motor Company and Autocar. They were adapted for a wide variety of use such as self -driven anti -aircraft weapon or self -driven artillery. Although it was not initially popular due to a significant armor or roof lack of crew from shrapnel, it was initially used by most of the allies during the war.During the Cold War, the vehicle was used by various state and non -state operators in conflicts in South America, Middle East, Africa and Asia and remained in service until the mid -1990s. As of 2019, they are still in use in Mexico. The development of an armored half palette began with the OCM 14188 ammunition directive to turn a M3 scout car into a half -pallet. The prototype was built in Rock Island Arsenal with the help of White Motor Company and called T7. It had the same chassis and engine as the M3, but it had larger front wheels and a shorter front clip. The armor consisted of 1/4 -inch thick hardened armor plate and was armed with two M1919 machine guns and one M2 Browning machine gun run by a team of eight people. In 1938, the tests in the Aberdeen Proving Ground performed inadequate due to front -wheel drive. The T7 was transformed into a reconnaissance tool and returned to the army. [10]During 1939 and 1940, the prototype of the M2 semi -crawled car was built and was developed by the army in Aberdeen Proving Grounds. The M3 was developed as a larger version of the M2, equipped with two M1919 machine guns and a M2 Browning machine gun for battle use. M3 also added a rear door and five additional seats in the back. M3 was tested in Aberdeen Proving Grounds in the summer of 1941 and soon entered service
