The Consolidated B-24 Liberator is an American strategic bomber, heavy transport and patrol aircraft from World War II. The B-24 was a high-wing aircraft made entirely of metal, with four Pratt-Whitney R1830-65 engines, each with a power of 1200 HP, placed in the engine mounts on its wings. Characterized by its very wide wingspan, this aircraft had a wing structure called the "Davis lobe", which was used for the first time in mass production. The Davis lobe was a long wing with a small chord that tapered at the tip of its outline. This structure of the wings not only allowed them to be used primarily as fuel tanks, but also offered excellent flight characteristics. The prototype's first flight took place on 29 December 1939, and mass production for the US Air Force began in early 1942. Approximately a dozen B-24 bomber types were produced during the war, with the D, G, and J models being the most commonly produced. The B-24 was used in both Europe and the Pacific Ocean. He took part in all major Allied air and ground operations (including the bombardment of Ploieşti, the bomber offensive over Germany and the Normandy landings). Polish airmen also fought on this aircraft from September 1943. More than 18,000 of these bombers were produced during the war.
