Hobbytime Model Information

The Ilyushin Il-2 is a classic tail, single-engine, low-wing and mixed-structure Soviet attack aircraft designed by Sergei Ilyushin in World War II. The prototype flight took place on October 2, 1939, and mass production started in 1940 and continued until 1945. A total of 36,183 units of this wonderful aircraft were produced. The power unit was a 12-cylinder Mikulin AM-38 piston engine capable of developing up to 1600 horsepower. The concept of the Il-2 aircraft was based on the desire to create a heavily armed and heavily armored attack aircraft designed to destroy ground targets and armored vehicles of the enemy. Mass-produced aircraft had between 4 and 6 mm of armor around the engine and cockpit. Therefore, the Il-2 was resistant to small arms fire and single shots from 20 mm guns. Following the improvement of the quality of crew training and the implementation of new tactics, the Il-2 became an aircraft capable of wreaking havoc among the German Panzewaffe. It is no coincidence that the Germans nicknamed it "flying death" and its designer nicknamed it "flying tank". During the war, approximately a dozen versions of the Il-2 were produced; the most important of which is Il-2m3. Its crew consisted of two people - a pilot and a rear gunner, the Mikulin AM-38F (1700 KM) unit was used as the engine and a self-sealing fuel tank was added. Its aerodynamic properties have also been improved. In total, 7377 units of this version were produced until 1944. The Il-2 took part in all major battles on the Eastern Front – from Moscow (1941) to Stalingrad and Kursk (1942/1943) and the Berlin Campaign in 1945. Technical data (Ił-2 mod.1942 version): length: 11.65 m, wingspan: 14.6 m, maximum speed: 426 km/h, practical range: 740 km, practical ceiling height: 6200 m, armament: fixed - 2 23 mm WJ guns, 2 x 7.62 mm SzKAS machine guns, undermount - 8 RS-82 / RS-132 unguided missile, bomb up to 400 kg.
