The Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat attack aircraft with a turbofan engine. The prototype flight took place in 1972 and mass production took place between 1975 and 1984. A total of 715 units were produced. The A-10's main mission was to combat Warsaw Pact armored vehicles in Central and Western Europe. It was also intended to balance the USSR's quantitative superiority in armored weapons over NATO troops. This mission has led to the aircraft's extremely high damage resistance, cockpit armor and very high overall durability of the structure unseen in other attack aircraft.
