Hobbytime Review

The Vought SB2U Vindicator is an American aircraft -based pike -based pike bombing aircraft, which was developed for the United States Navy in the 1930s. Vindicators were still in service during the Midway War, but in 1943 they were all withdrawn to educational units. He was known as Chesapeake in the royal navy service.
In 1934, the United States Navy issued a new scout bombing aircraft for the use of aircraft carriers and received an offer from six manufacturers. Specification was published in two parts, one with a single -wing and the other with double winged. The designs offered in both categories, which will be XSB2U-1 and XSB3U-1 respectively, are Vought. The dual -wing aircraft was considered a "hedge" against the reluctance of the US navy to maintain modern configuration, as well as single -poultry design.
The XSB2U-1 had a traditional low-winged single-wing configuration with a retractable traditional tail wheel landing set; The pilot and tail marksman was sitting together under a long greenhouse -style canopy. The body was a steel pipe construction coated with aluminum panels from a back body with a fabric -covered rear body, and the folding console wing had a completely metal structure. A Pratt & Whitney R-1535 Twin-Wasp Junior Radial Engine drove a two-winged constant fast-speed propeller, aiming to serve as a diving brake during a diving bombing attack. The use of the propeller brake was not completely successful, and in practice the US navy Vindicators lowered the lower team of the aircraft to see the speed brake task and dived at more shallow angles. A single 1000 lb (450 kg) bomb can be carried on a swinging trapeze to allow it to clean the propeller in a steep diving, while other bombs can be carried under the wings to provide a maximum of 1,500 lb (680 kg) bomb load.
SB2U, Brewster XSBA-1, Curtiss XSBC-3, Great Lakes XB2G -1, GRUMMAN XSBF -1 and Northrop XBT-1 were evaluated. Great lakes and group references were all made into production except. A prototype, called XSB2U-1, was ordered on October 15, 1934 and delivered on 15 April 1936. The XSB2U-1, Buno 9725 prototype, which was adopted for operational assessment on July 2, 1936, fell on August 20, 1936. [4] He was successful. The completion of the experiments led to more orders with 56 SB2U-1 ordered on October 26, 1936, [5] and 58 more of a slightly modified version on 6 October 1938, SB2U-2.
The SB2U-3 was a heavier version designed as a long-range reconnaissance bomber, which can be equipped with a traditional wheeled sub-team for operations carried out by aircraft carriers or black air bases or bundles. In order to provide the necessary augmented range, the body fuel tank, which was installed on SB2U -1 and -2, was supported by the integrated wing tanks, while the aircraft's queue was increased. The prototype XSB2U-3, which was converted from the last SB2U-1, flew on February 1939, and after it was tested as both black and floating aircraft, on September 25, 1939, 57 SB2U-3 was ordered for US maritime.
SB2U has been prominent in the 1941 Dive Bomber film.
There were 260 examples of all the vindicator variants produced, and one example is protected at the National Maritime Aviation Museum in Florida, Nas Penceacola.
