Hobbytime Review
USS Bunker Hill (CV-17), II. It is one of the 24 ESSEX aircraft carriers produced by the United States during World War II. It takes its name from the Bunker Hill battle. In May 1943, he was his first position and was sent to the Pacific Front. Iwo Jima played a role in the expeditions to Okinawa and the Japanese mainland. In the war, 90-100 aircraft carried 90-100 aircraft, mostly F4u Corsair.
In 1945, Bunker Hill, a flagship of Task Force 58, took part in Iwo Jima and the Sittling of Yamato. On May 11, 1945, he was attacked by two Kamikazes while he supported the Okinawa campaign. A6m Zero left a bomb of 250 kg on the deck of the ship, but this bomb drilled the armor and came out of the other side and exploded on the ocean surface. The aircraft, which left the bomb at the last speed, dived between many parked planes waiting on the deck. Fuel warehouses were full and their ammunition was complete because the planes on the deck would take office.
While a big fire wrapped the deck, after about 30 seconds, the second A6m Zero dive into diving. The plane, which left a bomb between the anti -aircraft fire, dived into the deck. The bomb drilled the deck and exploded in the preparation section of the pilots. As a result of the flame -field gas, there were many eruptions.
As a result of this conflict, USS Bunker Hill lost 346 men, 43 were never found, 264 were injured. Although not to fight, the ship, which did not get a vital injury, returned to America. It was still repaired when the war was over.
