Bell AH-1Z Viper [4] is an American double-engine attack helicopter based on AH-1W Supercobra, which was developed for the United States Marine Posts as part of the H-1 upgrade program. AH-1Z has four knives, beds without beds, composite main rotor system, upgraded transmission and a new target engagement system. [5] AH-1Z, one of the latest members of the producer Bell Huey family, is also called "Zulu Cobra" based on the pronunciation of the military phonetic alphabet of the variant letter.
AH-1Z completed the Naval Test Flight Test in May 2005. On October 15, 2005, USMC accepted the delivery of the first AH-1Z production helicopter entering the fleet through the Navy Air Systems Command. AH-1Z and UH-1Y completed their development tests in early 2006. In the first quarter of 2006, the aircraft were transferred to the Opell Test Unit on the Nas Patuxent River and started the Opell Test.
In February 2008, AH-1Z and UH-1 started the second and last part of the Open Open. The AH-1Z test was stopped in 2008 due to problems in targeting systems. Ah-1z was later declared ready for war on 30 September 2010.
